i’m also reading WARRIORS again. The newest series, “Dawn of the Clans.” They are not as fun to read as when i was a kid but i still get a kick of wild house cats murdering and romancing each other, what a sick freak.
they are, as a whole, way depressing. the other series always had the theme of “there is hope so long as we have the clans- and star clan.” this series (set- well, at the DAWN of the clans) lacks that as part of the narrative. it also seems to establish that the clans where founded on harsh misunderstandings, rash leadership, and piles of dead cats. warriors is not kind. some of it feels like bad writing, but there is a genuine tone of futility in the first three books.
so ya still tearing through Soul Eater, it’s pretty great not exactly the deepest or most complex show but it definitely has some substance backing up the style (primarily in the characters- the themes are a bit too scattered to really add up to much and the story is typical. so far, im not done but i hear the ending isn’t exactly a surprise).
i know people find Maka annoying because of how contradictory her decisions can seem, but i find her to be very relatable and even realistic. characters that make stupid decisions because they are literally too stupid to make basic logical connections about a situation (naruto etc) are FAR less realistic than one that makes emotional decisions even while fully understanding the alternate, more logical routes… who hasn’t done this in their own life… i do this all the time. i majored in art after all…
but BUT Crona… less realistic, but his story of emotional recovery after escaping horrific abuse through the kindness and forgiveness of others is very inspiring. i thought he was just gonna die a tragedy, but he ended up being one of THOSE characters that i always love so much. i want to believe that even totally broken people can find confidence and seek a better future, and i’ve always related closely to the weakling characters that end up stronger (see: simon, even edward elric). i read that crona gets the short end of it in the manga though; and i’m kinda glad an anime series does its own thing for once. XD
I also really like Soul because he’s just… the best, that’s what. But the entire cast is fantastic all around, really. i kinda wish spider lady did more to set herself apart as a villain, but oh well, satan snake lady is the true villain of the series anyway.
